Nicole Kidman plays Lady Sarah Ashley, the perfect English woman. She arrives in Australia a couple of years prior to the start of the World War II. Bryan Brown plays King Carney, a ruthless businessman. Lady Ashley has arrived to meet her estranged husband and her objective is to sell their cattle ranch to this businessman. But on arrival, she discovers that Lord Ashley is dead and an employee, Fletcher – played by David Wenham, is cheating on her husband’s business. A young boy, Nullah, of mixed origin is also mistreated by Fletcher. Backed by the sense of uprightness and a desire to attain justice for the mistreated, Lady Ashley decides to sell her cattle to the troops in Darwin. But in order to do this, she requires the help of an independent cowboy, the character played by Hugh Jackman.
